People who were at the 2023 edition of Bornhack may remember my 13.37 HAX SMD badge soldering workshop - https://bornhack.dk/bornhack-2023/program/1337-hax-smd-badge-soldering-workshop/ - more than 50 people joined and made an electronic name tag containing a microconltroller, 42 LEDs, and two-way IR communication.
This soldering workshop and it's successor (adding full coulour LEDs) were repeated a several times at various venues (i.e. hacker spaces, camps, scouting etc) with more than 300 participants in total.
This year I'll be at Bornhack with a new design - Again with lights, and again something to hang around your neck, and again able to detect and synchronize with friends, but now with added functionality

Surface Mounted Device (SMD) soldering workshop - Mixed techniques: screen printing solder paste, hotplate reflowing, manual SMD soldering and various tricks.
According to some SMDs are tiny (they blow away when you sneeze), hard to handle (you can barely see them) and hard to solder (you can barely see them and the tip of a soldering iron is larger than the component). In this workshop you will gain some experience working with SMD components, and discover that it can be much faster … Read more

Can YOU solder 300 parts on a PCB, making 1000 connections in under 1 hour?
Using hotplate reflow soldering this is possible, and has been done. If you have attended one of my SMD soldering workshops, you know how it works: With a stencil, solder paste, PCB, parts, tweezers and a hotplate. Using only a soldering iron this may be possible, but is unlikely to look as nice as reflow soldered or even be successful, and will certainly be MUCH slower.
Do you know any tricks… Read more
