There are some unwritten rules in the field of IT: try turning it off & on, don't write your own crypto, it's always DNS, don't self-host a mail server, etc. After a short adventure at work involving SMTP, I decided to challenge that last one. During this talk, I'll go over what I learned while setting up & running a mail server. What options are there? Which standards and protocols are involved? What are the advantages and how much spam can you expect?
