There are some unwritten rules in the field of IT: try turning it off & on, don't write your own crypto, it's always DNS, don't self-host a mail server, etc. After a short adventure at work involving SMTP, I decided to challenge that last one. During this talk, I'll go over what I learned while setting up & running a mail server: the basics of email, which standards and protocols are involved, what options are there for selfhosting, what's the operational burden, etc.
