13.37 HAX SMD trinket soldering workshop - session II Feedback

Surface Mounted Device (SMD) soldering workshop - Mixed techniques: screen printing solder paste, hotplate reflowing, manual SMD soldering and various tricks.

According to some SMDs are tiny (they blow away when you sneeze), hard to handle (you can barely see them) and hard to solder (you can barely see them and the tip of a soldering iron is larger than the component). In this workshop you will gain some experience working with SMD components, and discover that it can be much faster than manual through-hole component soldering.

So far, more than 300 people have attended previous versions of this workshop, and ALL went home with a working project (though occasionally a little rework was required)

On one side of the PCB you will use screen printing to spread just the right amount of solder paste right where it is needed, use tweezers to place the components onto the thus primed PCB and finally a hotplate to solder all components in one go, and. On the other side of the PCB you will manually solder the remaining components. While doing this, you will pick up a few tricks to make SMD soldering more enjoyable

You'll make a useful trinket to wear around your neck, that you can write your name on, with a microcontroller, some LEDs and other components and IR receiver/transmitter to communicate with other trinkets (and also previous workshops' badges) around you at a cost of 13HAX for the materials, including an AA battery
